PDP Gives Out Special Gifts Ahead March 28

The Peoples Democratic Progress National Youth Vanguard has set a new campaign trend by distributing bags of customized President Goodluck Jonathan rice.

PDP Gives Out Special Gifts Ahead March 28

The electioneering campaign in Nigeria is throwing up a lot of funny stuff with politicians and their managers trying to outdo one another in the area of creativity.

The trend of sharing food items like rice, milk, beverages and other edible items dates back to the second republic where politicians distributed such items.

But the modern day politicians have gone a step further by sharing customized items including recharge cards, towels, palm oil, palm wine and bottled water.

It will be recalled that With less than 12 days to the rescheduled February 14 presidential election, Kashamu Buruji has reportedly stormed Ogun State with thousands of bags of rice inscribed with President Goodluck Jonathan’s picture.

Meanwhile, the stratagem of presenting bags of rice to hungry residents to lure them to vote might not be unconnected with the stomach infrastructure popularised by the Ekiti state governor, Peter Ayodele Fayose, a development that was recently replicated by former Lagos state governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who reportedly gave out bags of rice, salt, vegetable oil, T-shirts and cash to many residents of the state.

Actress Nkiru Sylvanus Opens Up on Her Relationship With Governor Rochas

One rumour that continues to trail actress Nkiru Sylvanus, is that she is Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha’s mistress. This rumour has refused to go away because of the several appointments the fair-skinned actress has gotten under the Governor’s administration even though she is from Enugu State.

In this interview with Leadership newspaper, the actress explains her relationship with ‘Owelle’, as the governor is fondly called by his admirers. Read below:

What have you been up to lately especially since the premiere of your much acclaimed film, The Voice?

I’ve been busy with a couple of other movie projects since then. Of course, you know that entertainment is my first love. So it’s always dear to my heart; you can never let go of your first love. I’m working seriously, so you are going to hear from me soonest. I’ve got a couple of projects lined up for the year, but as you know, it’s the election season and there is a kind of lull. But trust me, as soon as we get over the election fever, I’ll swing into action.

You were the Special Adviser (AS) Lagos Affairs, to the government of Imo State, SA on public affairs and now the Director General, Imo Film Academy, what do you think are the chances of the governor in the coming election?

The chances of His Excellency Anayo Owelle Rochas Okorocha are non-negotiable. In fact, there’s no other candidate as far as Imo people are concerned. This is a man that has come to be adored by the people of Imo state. He has achieved way more than any governor that has led Imo state in the past. His works speak for him and the people of Imo know that Rochas Okorocha is a man that represents progress. Imo state has moved forward under him, the state has developed in all ramifications. From health to education, infrastructure to empowerment and what have you! So, Imo people definitely want the governor back because they don’t want to go backward. Rochas Okorocha within a short period has taken Imo people miles ahead. They are now proud of their state.

In most of your interviews, you’ve always expressed passionate views about the governor. It was even rumoured that you were dating him. What can you say?

Rumours are what they are, baseless rumours! The governor is my boss, but it will be unfair to see something good and not mention it. I speak passionately about him all the time, because of his good works, his belief and his passion for positive change. This is a man whom the people of Imo generally love for his good works. Since Okorocha became governor, the number of dualised road networks has increased, creation of new access roads are uncountable, while old dilapidated roads have been repaired and rural roads are uncountable. Positive impacts have also been made in the rehabilitation of public utilities, health, agriculture, youth empowerment, infrastructure improvements, etc. I can list his achievements from now till tomorrow and it won’t end.

But where do you think these negative rumours are coming from?

They are all lies. Propaganda fueled by those who are enemies of the state. They’ve realised that Okorocha’s achievements cannot be faulted and so resorted to propaganda by trying to massively misinform the people about his person. Another disappointing aspect is how people are sacrificing good governance and credibility for religious bias. Even some men who are religious leaders are now pitching their tents with different politicians because of selfish gains and have joined in fuelling political propaganda across the country. We face the same issue here in Imo State. Where is the love of God in all of this? It’s disappointing that discrimination has entered and taken root in Christendom.

But can we really separate religion from politics?

It’s not about separating religion from politics now. The problem is that churches are now involving themselves in partisan politics; one would begin to wonder how it got this bad. I know churches as a place where we live it all for God but what went wrong? Nigeria is a religious country and there is no way you can insist on a particular religion only being in power. I hear some pastors say “we can’t vote for a Muslim; we must vote a Christian,” my question is, when will that end? How do they intend to achieve that always? Or is it just for now? APC has a Muslim-Christian ticket, PDP has Christian-Muslim candidates, so what’s the confusion here? And after PDP’s four years more, that is if they get it, under their arrangement, power goes back to the north, what next? I think we should pray more for the unity of this country. Religious war is such that never ends and we do not want to go there. We shouldn’t allow these power hungry politicians destroy the church and this country. My advice to Nigerians is to look before you leap, think before you act or talk. While Christ tarries, let us try to love our neighbours as we love ourselves! That’s the word of God and love is the greatest of all.

What’s your opinion about the shift in dates of the 2015 election?

For me, it was a huge disappointment because by now, the nation would have left the corridor of uncertainty to the path of moving forward. The postponement is a big setback for the nation and democracy but anything for the peace and progress of Nigeria is okay! So we patiently await the holding of elections on the new dates.

Former World's Best Footballer Fabio Cannavaro Sentenced To 10 months In Prison

Former FIFA World Player of the Year (2006), Fabio Cannavaro, 41, has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for breaching orders to keep out of his home after it was seized by authorities.

The home of the former Real Madrid defender turned coach was seized after he was accused of tax evasion. The authorities claim he owes over €1m in unpaid taxes. They also seized goods worth about €1million as well as a €180,000 yacht belonging to Cannavaro.

He was arrested after he was caught going for a swim at his home's swimming pool with his wife and brother after breaking the lock authorities had used to lock his home. His brother and wife were also given custodial sentences. All three have appealed and will therefore have their sentences suspended until a final judgment is made.

Nigeria Doctors Protest Non-Payment Of 7 months Salaries

The Association of Resident Doctors at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest over the non-payment of their outstanding seven months salaries.

The doctors, who were dressed in their medical kits, went round the hospital complex chanting various anti-management songs.

They also displayed placards with various inscriptions, including “Many Doctors are still being Owed Seven Months Salary; LUTH Management, Ministry of Health, Accountant-General of the Federation and Budget Office Enough is Enough’’.

“No Respite yet on Poor Water and Power Supply; Inadequate Materials and Consumables; Non-payment of our December Salary, and Stagnation of Many Doctors for Years at same Salary Grade Level”.

The President of the association, Ramon Moronkola, said the protest was to press for the payment of salaries of 700 resident doctors in the hospital.

Mr. Moronkola said that resident doctors who were being owed included registrars, senior registrars and house officers of the hospital.

“This protest is to register our displeasure over the non-payment of our seven months’ salary since July, 2014 till date.

“Depending on our different cadres, some have not been paid December salary; the issue of stagnation of salary grade level and non-payment of three months pension refund.

“The poor working conditions in LUTH such as epileptic power supply and lack of water supply are not helping our training.

“We have had meetings with the management but nothing is being done to address these issues.
“We had the worst Christmas and New Year celebrations because we were not paid and yet, we have been patient and diligent at our work,” he said.

Mr. Moronkola, however, urged the Federal Ministry of Health, the Accountant-General of the Federation, Budget Office and the LUTH management to do the needful and alleviate the sufferings of doctors.

“We are not on strike, we are not interested in punishing our patients, this is just a peaceful protest to register our grievances and fight for our rights.

“We also want Nigerians to be aware of our plight and help us to appeal to the relevant authorities to do the needful by addressing our demands,” he said.

In his reaction, Chris Bode, the acting Chief Medical Director of LUTH, said that a hitch in the government’s payment system was responsible for the development.

“There was a problem with the government’s payment system and lots of doctors, not just resident doctors in LUTH were affected and it is being rectified,” Mr. Bode said.

He said that a meeting was held recently in Abuja over the problems, urging the doctors to be patient as they would be paid soon.

“The resident doctors should also focus on their residency training programme and not turn it into a salary earning venture.

“We don’t pay salaries but the management is doing all it can to assist the government and solve these problems,’’ he said.

Boko Haram Kidnaps Adamawa Council Vice Chairman

The Adamawa State Police Command on Wednesday confirmed the abduction of the Vice Chairman of Hong Local Government, Bijida Yakubu, by gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, Othman Abubakar, who confirmed the incident, said three vigilante members that were with Mr. Yakubu lost their lives in the encounter.

Mr. Abubakar, who did not give details, however, said the police officers investigating the incident have so far recovered the vice chairman’s shoes.

A resident of Hong who simply identified himself as Hussaini said that the incident occurred in Gayafa Village of the area.

“You know, insurgents attacked the village last week. The vice chairman who hailed from the village was on an assessment visit with some hunters when the insurgents attacked and over-powered them.
“About seven insurgents were killed in the encounter before they over-powered the hunters and took away the vice chairman,” he said.

Mr. Hussaini claimed that the abducted vice chairman was later allowed by his captors to call his wife with his cell phone before the device was switched off.
The Chairman of Adamawa branch of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, Sahabo Gurin, also confirmed the incident.

Adamawa is one of the three states most affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.
The insurgency has caused the death of about 20,000 people in northern Nigeria with hundreds of thousands of others displaced.

The Nigerian military recently began a major offensive against the group, reclaiming some of the territory initially seized by the insurgents.
